robbed, died 18 days later from a fractured skull; Jane Morgan, age 84, beaten and sexually assaulted, died from asphyxiation and was found dead in her bed; John Gabel, age
83, beaten and robbed-the list is extensive and frightening (Laker and Farr, 2008). Clearly, there is a need in the Yeadon community, as well as elsewhere in the Philadelphia
area, to help elderly individuals who are living independently in our community in protecting themselves. A community nursing program that is specifically geared to address this need should be formulated
and administered at a local community center or church. Elderly people are especially vulnerable to crime and this vulnerability goes beyond being the victims of assault, although this is certainly
the most serious crime perpetuated against them. The proposed program would educate Yeadon elderly concerning prevention strategies against burglary and assault, but also include instruction on prevention strategies against
purse snatchers and petty thieves, as well as how to spot con artists, who often prey on the elderly. In regards to assault, the program will include strategies for
avoidance, such as creating a buddy system, which pairs elderly neighbors with each other. Buddies check on one another and accompany one another on errands, such as to the bank,
grocery store, etc. They watch each others homes in the other persons absence. In other words, this is a Neighborhood Watch program that is specifically geared to meet the needs
of the elderly. A benefit of this system is that it establishes and keeps elderly citizens connected to a social network that makes them less isolated. One of the
