In order to best insure patient health and welfare community nurses must sometimes be willing to step outside the strictly clinical aspects of nursing and take an active sociological role in their patients lives. An excellent example of this need comes with a fictional case study involving a community health nurse employed in a rural Alberta health unit. In the case study at hand, geography and extreme poverty have coupled with a twenty percent unemployment rate to result in a largely homebound population that is experiencing fatigue, anemia, and a high susceptibility to respiratory infections. Many of the adults smoke and this has further complicated the problem. The community has become crime ridden but, interestingly, the primary target of the crime has been grocery stores. The community health nurse in this area is well aware of the many problems her patients are facing. She frequently sees her patients not just in the clinic but also as a part of regular home visits. Although many in the small rural community receive funding from Social Services they have complained that that funding is insufficient to provide for even their most basic dietary needs. Part of the problem is the distance that they have to travel to reach a large urban centre with more affordable food. The people in this rural community are just barely making ends meet as it is.
