homeless people in the U.S. and about 380,000 in Britain. Health of the homeless is generally poor. They have much higher rates of all types of infections. This can lead
to more infections in the general population. Infections in the homeless are linked to malnutrition and long durations of homelessness. TB rates for the homeless in America are 46
times more prevalent than in the typical community. The incidence of Hepatitis C viral infection is four times greater among the homeless. Rates of HIV infection can run between 1
and 20 times greater than in the general community (Kelland, 2012). The homeless also have higher rates of Hepatitis A and B, diphtheria, foot problems and skin infections. There
is a real concern with the numbers of TB patients. This is a bacteria disease that spreads through the air. As a person coughs, they are spreading little droplets
of the bacteria to those around them (Kelland, 2012). Proper nutrition is essential for good health. Homeless people do not get proper nutrition. They certainly do not eat three
proper meals each day. This weakens the bodys immune system that is used to fight off infections and other health problems. These health issues are not confined to the homeless.
They are in the community and spreading bacterial infections to the general public. Appropriate health care could greatly improve the health of these folks. Left unchecked increasing infections could result
in an epidemic with severe consequences. This is where the community health nurse can play a major role. The legal and ethical roles of the community nurse are: promoting
