But, still there are many people in the nation who are low-income and yet not so poverty ridden that they are on some welfare program. They are working individuals, or indigent individuals, and yet they have no way of paying for health care. They are left to fend for themselves, but yet in the end they will end up costing the nation more money when they do suffer from some condition and a hospital cannot turn them away because of their inability to pay. With all of this in mind the following paper examines community health for such individuals and then discusses how health fairs can help the situation. Community Health and Health Fairs As mentioned, there are many people in the United States who do not have health insurance. They are not provided insurance by their employer, they are not eligible for low-income health care from welfare programs, they are indigent and alone, or they self employed and do not make enough money to buy insurance. There are many reasons why people may not have insurance, or the ability to get insurance and these people essentially fall into the cracks of society, ignored. They are often referred to as the underserved population. According to Gallup polls it seems that out of every six individuals, one will be uninsured (Newport; Mendes, 2009). It is noted that, "Hispanic Americans, at a rate approaching triple the national average, are the most likely subset of the population to be uninsured" (Newport; Mendes, 2009).
