which has caused some experts to call this trend a "silent epidemic" (Anonymous, 2000). Statistics on how many women suffer from domestic violence on a yearly basis ranges from
roughly 1 million to as high as 4 million by some experts. These injuries can be severe, as it is not usual for a weapon to be involved. Roughly one-fourth
of all homicides are the result of domestic violence (Mercy and Saltzman, 1989) As this indicates, domestic violence is one of the countrys main health problems. However, in assessing the
extent of domestic violence, women in rural areas constitute a frequently overlooked population who are at high risk for this problem (Schroeder and Weber, 1998). The standard stereotypical idea is
that country living is that it is idyllic, which tends to encapsulate domestic violence as a purely urban problem. However, research focusing on rural batter women has found that
this population has an increased risk for social "isolation and financial dependence, greater patriarchal family structure and fundamental religious beliefs, and decreased social services," which are all factors that tend
to rationalize and justify domestic violence (Schroeder and Weber, 1998). Community health nursing can be effective in combating this health problem. Inherent at arriving at a diagnosis of
domestic violence is to, first of all, screen for domestic violence with all injured patients. When screening for abuse, Flitcraft (1995) emphasizes that is the frequency of injury, and not
the severity of the injury, that is the "hallmark of domestic abuse" (p. 187). Sheridan (1993) advises clinicians to note whether or not the injury has a pattern, that
