The indigenous peoples of Australia suffer a number of injustices as a result of the sociopolitical structure of their country and their status in that
structure (Rowley 1986, p. 3). Even the terminology which is used in reference to these people is reflective of the societal prejudice that has been hurled their way.
Although the term "aborigine" itself, in fact, has caused certain problems for indigenous inhabitants of this country; it remains the term of choice for collectively grouping these individuals. The
terminology that is used in reference to these indigenous peoples, however, is just one aspect of the societal stratification which keeps the indigenous peoples of Australia at a severe disadvantage.
This stratification is found in everything from the educational system to the provision of health care and occurs because the aborigine differs from the mainstream population in a number
of obvious respects such as culture and religion (Rowley 1986, p. 3). These differences have provided the basis for the deep discrimination that has kept the aborigine subdued in
Australian society. Racism, of course, is the primary culprit in the economic and cultural stratification of Australian society. Racism is, in fact,
one of the primary shapers of contemporary Australian society. In the nineteenth century in particular the concept of racial inferiority was purported by a number of disciplines. Anthropology,
medicine, psychology, and sociology all became vehicles of racism as they proposed and supported theories which perpetuated disenfranchisement and segregation of the aborigines from mainstream Australian society. Because of
this long history of disenfranchisement, Australias indigenous peoples suffer in a diversity of areas. Consequently, a needs assessment is no better justified for any other people. Wilcannia (in
