Promotion. 2010). These indicators reflect the major health concerns in this country, thus, they are high priority health issues. The group also selected these ten because it is possible to
motivate people to do something about them. Finally, they were selected because it is possible to measure them. Obesity is an epidemic in our society. Being overweight means the individual
weighs more than the recommended amount for their height. People are overweight when they have a BMI (body mass index) of 25-29.9 (Slimplant, 2010). About one-third of Americans are overweight.
When that number toes to 30, they are obese (Slimplant, 2010). The BMI for a healthy weight would be between 18.5 and 25. In the U.S., about 73 million people
are obese, which means they are at least 30 pounds overweight (Hellmich, 2010). A person is considered morbidly or extremely obese when their BMI is 40 or higher. Just over
5 percent of the population fits into this category. These data reflect that more than two-thirds of the American population is overweight or obese. According to a 2005 study, the
United States had the greatest incidence of obesity with 30.6 percent of the population being obese. That increased to 34 percent in 2009. Demographically, 32.2 percent of men are obese,
