Essay / Research Paper Abstract

3 pages in length. The terms "aggregate" and "community" - while seeming to share a foundation of similarity - are actually as polar opposite as any two natural elements that repel each other; not only do these disparate groups fail to share anything but the humans who populate them, but their strikingly different structures illustrate how one is based within an underpinning of unity and identity while the other is solely focused upon desire and immediate gratification. In short, communities represent hope, spirit, wholeness, compassion, patience and self-discipline while aggregates reflect urgency, want, unadulterated appetite and self-indulgence. As the community takes into account that what happens to one also happens to the whole, an aggregate is assembled by heterogeneous people for the sole purpose of gleaning a specific goal. To Watson (2001), community is similar to an onions many layers with the individual at its core and each layer representing family, local and regional culture. When these layers shift or otherwise fall apart, it sets the stage for transition into an uncaring, antisocial aggregate. The further that two layers are from each other, the less effective and even threatening they are to one or the other on the grounds of unfamiliarity, cultural disparity and a distance that leads to increasing indifference and even xenophobic hostility (Watson, 2001). Criminals are one example of an aggregate population whose only motivating factor is self-satisfaction through whatever means necessary. For those who are not criminally-minded, it may be difficult to understand how crime can be a satisfying behavior, however, criminals are deviants of an otherwise civilized society so their pleasure is not based upon communal - or even logical - components (Levinson, 2002). Within the broad spectrum of crime are subsets of lawbreakers whose motivation is driven by various factors that serve to comprise myriad criminal theories, so another aggregate population can be contained inside the parent population and have its own standards of operation that are both similar to and divergent from it (Blumstein et ...
