the people of San Francisco can reply that they are doing quite a lot to address this systemic problem. Furthermore, the activism of San Francisco is spreading as other groups
organize throughout many US cities in order to address the problem of homelessness. As this suggests, the example of San Francisco shows what communities can do to help alleviate this
societal problem San Franciscos homeless project is called Project Homeless Connect and it consists of a massive volunteer effort that brings together dozens of city services for the homeless in
one location on a bimonthly basis (Romney and Glionna B3). As many as 2,000 volunteers at one time, students, nurses, technical workers, social workers, etc., meet with homeless citizens in
ones of the citys large auditoriums (Romney and Glionna B3). Numerous merchants also participate. LensCrafters supplies eyeglasses. Wheelchair repair is available. The citys taxi companies provide free transportation
to the homeless who attend. Students from San Franciscos culinary school provide food. Information is available pertaining to referrals to shelters, support housing, and other how to apply for government
aid. This aspect of San Franciscos Project Homeless Connect is particularly effective because it makes unnecessary for homeless citizens to make multiple appointments all over the city in order to
fully utilize social services available to them. Philip F. Mangano, the Bushs administrations "homelessness czar," attended this San Francisco event last year and, since that time, this program has
