the spread of CAP in clinical settings. The researchers designed a quantitative study to determine the effectiveness of using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based method for assessing the etiology
of CAP in adult patients, especially when there is the potential presence of multiple types of infections. Synopsis The purpose of the
study, described as the study "aim" was to utilize the PCR-based diagnostic platform in cases where mixed infections occur, to assess the etiology of CAP in patients in the hospital
setting. A comparative view of data collected from the use of the PCR platform was utilized in combination with conventional methods. The study participants included a patient
population that had been utilized and samples collected in a previous study, and the authors did not specifically identify the inclusion criteria, instead referencing a previous study they conducted in
2008 (Johansson, Kalin, Giske & Hedlund, 2008). The patient population selected was assessed during a 12 month period between 2004-2006 and included patients who were admitted to the Department
of Infectious Diseases at Karolinska University Hospital in Solna, Stockholm, Sweden, as a result of the diagnosis of CAP. This prospective study utilized 184 consecutive patients.
All of the patients who were admitted were provided with informed consent. The researchers reported the baseline characteristics of the patient population, which included 94 males and
90 females, with a mean age of 61.3 years, though the patient ages ranged from 18-93 years. The researchers also related the fact that a repdominant number of patients
studied had at least one underlying condition or disease, including malignancy. The patients had an average hospital stay of 7 days, though the range was from 1-69 days.
