reliable avenues for generating an advantage in any market. This being said, organizations are now left with the problem of seeking out ways to manage information towards strategic ends that
doesnt rely entirely upon information technology systems, as they once did in the past. The emerging consensus is that the best way to go about this is to utilize human
resources as an additional layer of knowledge management to add a skills-oriented dimension to the handling of information. One effective way to achieve this is through the integration of communities
of practice into an organizational framework. First theoretically addressed in the early 1990s, communities of practice can be loosely defined as any voluntary collective of individuals who actively seek to
share knowledge for the sake of contributing to and bolstering the quality and scope of a specific knowledge area in which they are all mutually invested or interested. Historically, communities
of knowledge have been used in an inter-organizational context to provide lasting benefits for all involved organizations. However, in the highly competitive 21st century, it may well be in the
interest of organizational leaders to develop communities of practice in house for the exclusive purpose of broadening the knowledge base upon which the organization and its information management systems draws
to inform its strategic direction and leadership decisions. This begs the question, of course, of how best to integrate communities of practice into an organizational framework to leverage the most
