some extent, was a world of its own separate and apart from the rest of the country. Why? The people in each sector did do different things, and did have
different community roles. Agriculture was the centerpiece of the community in the rural part, but one cannot negate the fact that for example, Raoyang had a wonderful economy (Friedman, Selden,
Johnson and Pickowicz 3). How was the economy run? People weaved baskets, made rope, candles, soap and fireworks along with an assortment of other items (3). By 1749, Raoyang had
been bustling and there were in fact permanent daily markets in its midst (3). The region would become too populated and there was the complaint that suddenly, there were too
many people and too little land (3). It was not so much the population that would serve to trouble the residents of such a place, but natural disasters loomed large.
There were floods in 1737, and then again a year later (Friedman, Selden, Johnson and Pickowicz 4). It took its toll. The Qing state was able to provide some
relief for the poor (5). It should be noted that the agricultural areas seemed to become more dependent on the government. One might compare the situation to that of the
United States in the twentieth century when farmers went bust, depended on government assistance to get on their feet, and still continue to take stipends from the powers that be.
It seems that unlike other industries, farming depends upon conditions beyond anyones control. To some extent, this makes the rural population vulnerable and so they are more likely to agree
to the socialist ideal. It is natural for people to feel this way after having many setbacks and problems that have been no fault of their own. In this way,
