Robert Mayhew (1993) is that Plato might have been committed to a sort of communism for the lower class alone. This is odd as modern communism includes the whole of society but Plato distinguishes the hierarchy by class. Yet, the author contends that this cannot be proven with any certainty and it is hard to say what Plato really had in mind in respect to the lower classes (1993). Still, it is an interesting premise. Did Plato think about a communist system ages before Karl Marx would invent the prototype? It is said in the article that it is not clear how the lower classes are expected to live (1993). It is also noted that while Plato makes a case for communism for children, it is not as clear whether or not this should be the case for women (1993). The article supports the assumption, but also emphasizes the vagueness in which Plato wrote. In his conclusion, Mayhew (1993) states the strongest evidence for his main premise as being the fact that the greatest good for the city is what holds it together but the greatest evil is what splits it apart. The author also reiterates that Plato contends that there is a case for communism at least for the lower classes. The supporting premises for that conclusion have already been noted and generally come from Platos Republic for the most part. However, one of the supporting premises is that no one is to have private property unless it is absolutely necessary (1993). Another premise that follows and the author evaluates is the idea that there is a distinction between the rulers and the money making class and that this suggests communism for the lower class only (1993).
