there are communication professionals related to fields like Public Relations and Advertising. Of course, the role of the journalist is somewhat limited in UAE. The legal system under
which communication professionals work, as well as issues related to freedom of speech and freedom of the press, loom large. Things are not like they are in other countries, such
as the United States, that boast a free and liberal press. Within the UAE there are governmental restrictions as far as the press is concerned and how it affects
freedom of speech ("United," 2002). The press does tend to avoid direct criticism in respect to the Government, something viewed as self-censorship ("United," 2002). In contrast, the United
States allows for freedom of speech and freedom of the press, but there are limits there too. Sometimes the press is held back from disclosing information that would compromise national
security. The press obliges. Sometimes the press does censor itself as well, not just to protect the nation, but also out of respect for the people. At the same time,
the media hardly refrains from criticizing government. In fact, the press seems to be the most serious critic of the U.S. government. In the United Arab Emirates, there are restrictions
in terms of assembly and association as well ("United," 2002). There are also freedoms as it concerns religion ("United," 2002). One can surmise that this would to some extent affect
the freedom of the press. Private associations have to follow the UAE government censorship guidelines before publishing any material ("United," 2002). One has to ask what the role of communications
is in UAE if not to disseminate information. Of course, the press is not prohibited from disseminating cursory information. There is simply censorship. Just as one may self-censor by trying
