The three most common types of communication goals include: self-presentation goals; relational goals; and instrumental goals (Honors: Communication Capstone, 2003). Inherent in the efforts of an
individual to support these communication goals is the issue of conflict and conflict styles, which often result in the introduction of tactics to promote the achievement of goals.
Simply speaking, conflict is present when two individuals, groups or organizations support dichotomous views on the same issue. Communication theorists have maintained that conflict can be both positive and
negative in terms of interpersonal relationships, and can end in distinct change, needed change or the development of new ways of interacting. In order for conflict to be positive,
the negotiation of conflict requires an understanding of the factors that influence the initiation of conflict and the way in which conflict shapes human interactions. The tactics that are
used in the presence of conflict, then, can influence the way in which communications progress. In the presence of evident conflict, individuals can choose the tactic of
avoidance as an indicator of their role in the communication process (Richmond and McCroskey, 1998). Essentially, individuals may choose avoidance as a representative form of their own communication processes,
and avoidance may support an individuals self-presentation goals in the communication process. Competence in communication in the presence of conflict may be realized through an avoidance orientation, especially when
separate views of communication competence exist (Richmond and McCroskey, 1998). For example, when a husband and wife argue over finances, the husband may take a more forceful stand in
the communication, out of a desire for self-presentation goals and the need for feel "heard." The wife, on the other hand, may seek to avoid a communication on this
