stage is to consider the way that communication can take place. Communication is defined by the dictionary as "The exchange of thoughts, messages, or information, as by speech, signals, writing,
or behaviour"1. From this we can see communication can take place in a range of conscious and unconscious models, either directly or indirectly. This may also take place in
a unilateral manner, one to one, or one to many, or a bilateral manner where there is communication between parties rather than one way communication. There is also the direction
of communication; this can be vertical, up and down the hierarchy, or horizontal; between peers. Different types of communication will be suited
to different purposes and environments. However, for communication to be effective the message which is being communicated and the message which is received need to be aligned. It is apparent
that there are some forms of communication that the firm can control, and others that are more difficult or impossible to influence. The formal forms of communication may be more
controllable2. The company may have policies or strategies on how this communication takes place. The control and approach to the formal communication
will also impact on the culture and the way informal communication take place3. Firms will have a number of different communication tools; these may include the use of mission statements
and vision statements as well as other documentation for the firm which may include employee handbooks. There are some strategies which have proven to be useful, color coding documents such
as memos, with red for urgent, orange or yellow important and possibility time sensitive but not urgent and green for items that are not urgent or time sensitive. This has
