and between staff. Communication occurs both orally and through the various written and digitized records upon which the healthcare environment evolves. Effective communication (whether oral or written) is,
in fact, a prerequisite in health care. Communication directly impacts health outcome and can even mean the difference between life and death in some instances. The lack of
effective communication is directly associated with poor health outcome while proper communication optimizes patient welfare. Assumptions are sometimes made in the
health care environment that all health care staff attending that patient are automatically aware of all the information in play. In reality this is almost an impossible task.
The only way that patient health can be optimized is for medical staff to communicate effectively both with one another and with the patient. Both of these tasks can
be complex to say the least. A number of factors interplay to hamper communication in many instances. These factors include things such as language barriers, cultural differences,
and inadequate record keeping. Not only are the types of information pertaining to a patient diverse, the sheer volume of information for any one patient can be almost overwhelming.
Fortunately, numerous improvements are being made in health care that will better insure adequate future communication. Properly communicating with patients is one
of the best means that medical professionals have at their disposal to diagnose illness and determine an appropriate treatment plan. DerGurahian (2008) emphasizes the importance of communication between medical
staff and patients in patient safety. Consider, for example, the need to insure medication safety. This is a difficult task without effective communication between patient and medical staff.
