different cultures as well as different social classes with those cultures as they ultimately end up on a ship together. It is a novel rich with communicative elements that
range from traditions and physical actions, to language and gender constraints. The following paper examines the novel as it relates to communication, primarily the communication of the Indians in the
novel as they interact with one another and outsiders. Communication in Ghoshs Sea of Poppies This novel takes place during what
is known as the Opium War that occurred in 1838. It was a war that involved the Chinese and the British, and clearly one that involved the Indian people as
well. In this novel there is a ship, the Ibis, which will ultimately house many indentured servants and people from varying backgrounds, cultures, and traditions. As one author notes, "The
ship is packed with a multitude of characters both high and low" (Cheuse). The characters are numerous and often complex in their
culture and thus their communicative styles, which plays a very important role in the novel. For example there is Zachary who is black but can also pass himself off as
white which clearly brings into play language and communication styles. There is Paulette, a woman who is French but prefers to wear saris rather than petticoats and who was ultimately
raised by a Muslim wet nurse and so she is able to play the role of an Indian worker, or a coolie. There is the character of Neel, a privileged
Indian, Kalua, a very lower caste individual, and Deeti who, once involved in raising opium, ends up with Kalua. In order to best understand the various ways in which the
