She lives at home and has no discernible life of her own. The films conflict arises from the cultural and social expectations of her family, particularly her father, which clashes
with Toulas ambitions and her reality in mainstream American culture. The first hurdle for Toula is to convince her father, Gus, to allow her to take computer classes. As her
father insists on keeping patriarchal control over her life, he is manipulated to think that this is his idea. Likewise, after she learns computers, her father is manipulated to think
it was his idea that Toula take over the administration of her aunts travel agency. At the travel agency, she meets and begins dating Ian Miller, an English teacher
and non-Greek. This is a major problem from her fathers viewpoint, as it violates all of his cultural and social conventions for his daughter to marry a non-Greek. Ian appeases
her family by agreeing to be baptized in the Greek Orthodox Church. While many mainstream American men would resent the intrusiveness of Toulas family, Ian seems to thrive on it,
relishing their emotionality and exuberance, as his family is portrayed as extraordinarily bland and humdrum. While all human beings experience the same emotions, culture has a profound effect on
how emotions are valued and expressed (Adler and Russell 126). Some cultures, such as Asian American and Hong Kong Chinese, value "low arousal positive affect (such as calm)" while other
value "high arousal positive affect," i.e. "excitement" (Adler and Russell 127). When Gus learns that Toula is planning on marrying a non-Greek, he is devastated and his reaction could not
