Managers face a number of issues when trying to motivate employees. The challenges center on the fact that each individual responds to different types of motivational efforts different. In fact, the same person may not be motivated by the same thing all the time. One of the most basic aspects in any corporate culture is the communication process. The type of communication process an organization uses may be motivating and it may enhance morale or it could do just the opposite. Ward (2009) wrote that the way an organization communicates with employees during these hard economic times will have a direct impact on their morale and productivity. Communication is important in all times but especially when there are so many layoffs. Ward (2009) offers four suggestions for good communication. Be clear about what is happening and what the organization is doing. This is transparency. Practice timely and honest communication in order to build trust. Be straightforward, consistent, honest and authentic. Decide which medium to use for which communication messages, e.g., e-mail, intranet, face-to-face (Ward, 2009), newsletters, bulletin boards and so on. Consistent and open communication with employees will engender trust. It will help employees to feel more secure in their job.
