The way that individuals employ language to communicate can vary both subtly and dramatically according to gender. Not only are their basic differences in the way males and
females communicate, both male and female speakers vary what they say and how they say it in accordance with the environment. This variance is determined to a large degree
by sociocultural dictates and factors such as socioeconomics and even race. This phenomenon is particularly interesting in Western cultures. Although we often think of ourselves as a homogenous
society, the reality is that there are distinct differences in communication styles within our society. Janet Holmes is just one of the scholars
that have examined the variance in communication as it relates to gender. She emphasizes that factors such as socioeconomics and race can have an important impact on the degree
of that variation. She contends that women are simply more polite in their linguistics than are men. While men are more typified by being linguistically intrusive or even
rude, women communicate in more refined ways. Holmes (137) suggests that this can be related to the binary opposition that has existed between the genders throughout history.
