example, if two members of a team are personal friends, the teams dynamics will be different than if all members of the team were strangers or were only acquainted with
each other (Team Technology, 2008). Some of the forces that affect teams include personality, roles each member takes on, and corporate culture (Team Technology, 2008). One critical factor that will
drive team performance is the type of communication practiced within the team. Hunter (2007) comments that communication within teams is usually multidirectional. This means that communication occurs between and among
team members at the same time (Hunter, 2007) rather than communication being vertical wherein the message would travel in a vertical pattern, up or down. It is important to
be aware of the fact that teams journey through certain developmental stages, each of which has its own communication pattern. In the mid-1960s, Tuckman described a four-stage process of group
development and he subsequently added a fifth stage, which is still valid today (Chimaera Consulting Limited, 2001). The stages are: forming, when the group of individuals first comes together and
each may be motivated by a desire to be accepted; storming, when group members begin to address important issues and disagreements or conflicts may erupt; norming, which emerged from the
previous stage leading the group to establish their behavioral norms and they are ready to listen to each other; and performing when the group actually works to accomplish their goal;
adjourning, which is when the group is going to be disbanded and may feel like a loss to members (Chimaera Consulting Limited, 2001). Communication skills are essential for the members
