Discussion When such an assignment is given, the student needs to consider the works carefully or he or she will end up spending a lot of time looking for similarities that dont exist. If the student traces the common thread in these three works, he might say something like the following. "Salvation" is the story of a boy who lies to meet societys expectations of him. Our society expects us to behave or act in certain ways under certain conditions; we call these "standards" and we are supposed to follow them. I personally consider myself a very religious person and identify strongly with the way Langston Hughes feels in this story. He didnt get up and go to be "saved" because he never saw Jesus; in the end, he got up because he was expected to do so, and I identify with that. I assisted in catholic school since I was four, and there everybody expects you to be like they want you to be. I remember going to church with my classmates every week, the Christian songs that we had to memorize without knowing the meaning, the bible readings, and the sermons by the priests trying to convince us to be "good" persons. But what does it mean to be "good"? I understand that to be good means to follow "their" rules, the churchs rules-but sometimes not even "they" follow the rules. I feel that sometimes society makes us lie to be saved. I think young Langston was honest with himself, but he could not support that everybody else were pushing him to wake-up and be saved.
