typically address these problems. Teenage Pregnancy Fortunately, the national teenage pregnancy rate dropped by about 30 percent in the 1990s (Medical News Today, May, 2005). The rate peaked in
1990 with 117 pregnancies for every 1,000 women between the ages of 15 and 19 (Medical News Today, 2005). By 2000, the rate had dropped to 84 pregnancies per 1,000
teens and 74 in 2003 (Medical News Today, May, 2005). The numbers reflect rates of abortions, miscarriages and live births (Medical News Today, May, 2005). There are many different agencies
involved in the teen pregnancy problem. At the federal level, for instance, there is the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy (NCPTP) program (Medical News Today, May, 2005). NCPTP representatives
suggest the decreasing numbers are due mostly to the efforts of schools, parents, religious groups, community agencies, legislators, the media and the teens themselves (Medical News Today, May, 2005).
The issue of teen pregnancy is different between and among communities. While the rate declined by 30 percent nationally in the 1990s, in Houston, the rate dropped by 37 percent
between 1996 and 2003 and it dropped by 32 percent in the state of Texas over that same time span (Medical News Today, ). The rate was still high
for black and Latino girls, however (Medical News Today, ). Black teens were more than twice as likely to become pregnant as white teens and Latina teens were 3.5
times more likely to get pregnant than white teens (Medical News Today, ). Despite the overall decrease in the rate of pregnancies among teens, sill more prevention programs are
