to serve the people in a new way. It is a work that is filled with many different perspectives in relationship to understanding government and freedoms, private property and natural
rights. The following paper examines and analyzes various elements in Thomas Paines "Common Sense." "Common Sense" by Thomas Paine Paines work
begins with the following wherein he presents a philosophical, and perhaps even a liberal, examination of society and government: "SOME writers have so confounded society with government, as to leave
little or no distinction between them; whereas they are not only different, but have different origins" (Paine). He indicates that society is essentially developed by the desires of people and
that government is created "by our wickedness" (Paine). He offers a look at a sense of negative freedom when he indicates that government restrains the vices of the people in
a negative manner. Government limits us, giving us freedom, but in a negative manner, although society needs such control when it is large and in need of addressing the freedom
of the people and the desires of the majority. It could well be argued that society is liberal, as Paine illustrates it, and government is conservative for it controls.
Paine examines how society is a true blessing in all its states, but that government is purely a necessary evil. He
indicates that in its most negative state it is intolerable. He illustrates that in a government people give up many things, for they do so in payment for a sense
