Giltman 4/2010 Please Providing assurance that a commercial or computer security product is manufactured properly and implemented appropriately, the Common Criteria for Information Technology Security Evaluation is a basic framework that allows users to specify whether the systems functionality and assurance requirements are met and up to standards. More commonly known as simply Common Criteria, CC is an integral part for commercial products and they are performed to evaluate computer security products and its features. This evaluation takes place in several ways. One is through what is called protection profile where certain documents are identified to see if particular security requirements are met. Another is through what is labeled as security target where the document that identifies the security properties of the product under evaluation. The next form of evaluation is through what is called security functional requirements which specify individual security functions that may be provided by a product. The purpose of this evaluation process is to establish a level of confidence that can often time be placed in the products security features. The CC certification, implemented by the federal government, sets the international standard for certifying technology conforms to stringent security requirements. Companies make great strides to ensure their products meet the the specific security demands of government customers around the world.
