for Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), served as executive producer for Men in Black (1997), and directed a remake loosely based on H. G. Wells classic science fiction
novel, War of the Worlds (2005). These three films have common cinematic threads - the theme of government conspiracy, the plot of aliens threatening the American way of life,
and the narrative pattern of a heros journey - that connect them and reflect effective devices of the science fiction genre as seen through the eyes of Steven Spielberg.
In Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) uncovers a government conspiracy in the form of scientists whose mission is kept
secret from the American public because of national security concerns that news of the extraterrestrials will leak before scientists can fully understand the aliens and their possible threat to public
safety. Anyone caught trespassing on the Devils Mountain government base would be gassed by patrolling helicopters. The conspiracy theme is portrayed as relatively nonthreatening throughout the course of
the film, which actually makes it even more sinister. The theme of government conspiracy is very prominent throughout Men in Black. The
federal agent protagonists K (Tommy Lee Jones) and J (Will Smith) are concealing knowledge of an alien invasion from the public. They will use any means necessary to control
