nation (The Mariners Museum, 2000). One of the massive invasions of upper Canada was launched by Brigadier General William Hull and 2,000 militiamen but Hull was too cautious in his
actions and the effort was a total failure (The Mariners Museum, 2000). In that same month, August 1812, Commodore Isaac Chauncey was ordered to move squadrons onto Lakes Erie,
Ontario and Champlain (The Mariners Museum, 2000). Chauncey was to take command of a new fleet that was being built at Lake Ontario and Lake Erie (The Mariners Museum, 2000).
Chauncey was already in command of the base at Sackets Harbor on Lake Ontario and in April 1813, Chauncey crossed Lake Ontario and captured York, now called Toronto (The Mariners
Museum, 2000). The British retaliated and Sir James Yeo, a British naval commander, launched an attack against Sackets Harbor (The Mariners Museum, 2000). Chauncey had his choice of lakes
when building his squadron and although Lake Erie was more convenient, he chose Lake Ontario because it was strategically located so as to cut off British communication along the seaborne
