In order to consider this we will use a single brand; the Co-Op Fair Trade brand of chocolate, sold in the UK supermarket chain. When considering the commodity chain for any product, including the inputs for this product, there are a string of different parties involved, including producers, middlemen, exporters, importers, manufacturers and retailers, all of which have an important role to play before the product reaches the consumer. For the co-op some of the issues that may be relevant is a fragmented nature of the farmers who grow the cocoa beans, as well as the difficulties in terms of assuring quality and the ethical issues associated with buying products from a developing country. The start of the commodity chain is with the producers. The cocoa beans used in these bars originate in Ghana, West Africa. The structure of the cocoa beans industry with in Ghana is highly fragmented, with a large number of very small producers. The majority of producers are smallholder farmers, who undertaking operations with their immediate family and a few employees. The smallholders will be responsible for the purchase of beans, a key element that will impact on the price that they can achieve. Different cocoa beans may be used, and the farmers in Ghana have a good reputation for high quality cocoa beans as a result of the growing conditions as well as the beans which are native to the area.
