General Requirements Those in the HVAC field who would be certified in either (or both) planning and commissioning health care facilities must demonstrate knowledge in diverse areas. One of the requirements is to be able to "Describe relationship of medical equipment to HVAC design" (Instructions for Participating, 2009; p. 8). Certified individuals also must be able to "Apply understanding of medical procedures to room designs" (Instructions for Participating, 2009; p. 8) and understand the special requirements of HVAC to those medical functional areas (Instructions for Participating, 2009). Included in this certifiable knowledge are points such as being familiar with the "conditions of growth of disease organisms" (Instructions for Participating, 2009; p. 8). Individuals must be able to "Design systems with proper air flows and pressurizations" (Instructions for Participating, 2009; p. 9) and describe the role HVAC plays in exercising infection control within the facility. These are only a few points of the requirements of HVAC design and execution in the new health care facility, but they demonstrate the complexity inherent in commissioning a new facility building for occupancy and use in delivering health care services. Ross (2008) states that All operational scenarios must be confirmed, including normal power operation, transfer to and from emergency power, operating on emergency power, peak load conditions, varying load conditions, in alarm mode, stand-by modes, night setback modes and over-ride conditions for these setback modes, various filter load conditions, all extreme seasonal ...
