Africa consists entirely of mud huts and seem astonished when I indicate that my home city, Accra, is a modern city and the largest city in Ghana. While Accra is
certainly not as large as New York, I am quite familiar with a modern urban environment. My culture shock stems from a variety of other factors. First of all,
theres the weather in the Northeastern United States. As Accra is on the coast, the temperature is temperate and stays consistently moderate all year. Therefore, I was not fully prepared
for winter weather, with its ice, snowdrifts and impossible driving conditions. I miss the beautiful beaches and the sunny year-round sunny weather, but most of all, I miss the people.
People in Ghana are friendly, out-going and they make it a point to make strangers among them feel welcome. They smile and greet each other on the street. Courtesy
and civility are a way of life. The rhythm of life in Accra is like a song, with a lilting melody and moderate tempo. In comparison, life in New York
City is like a punk rock song, full of dissonance and noise, as the lyrics are screamed rather than sung. It is difficult for me to get used to the
way in which people routinely act in public. I am currently employed in the Bronx as a home care provider and I have few friends. Perhaps if I had
more relationships in this new country I would feel differently. There are, of course, things I enjoy about New York. As in my home city of Accra, there are museums
and theaters, many more in fact than I have access to at home. It is wonderful to stroll through such places as the Metropolitan Art Museum and see some of
