during WWII. Jeanne arrived at this camp when she was only 7 and so spent her childhood growing years living a life that was normal for her. In this story,
as one would likely assume, she essentially comes of age, growing up and learning about life in general. The following paper examines elements related to this coming of age for
Jeanne as they relate to separation from parents, losing dreams or illusions and embracing/understanding her heritage. Coming of Age in Farewell to Manzanar Much of the book details
Jeannes innocence, until she begins to grow up. For example, at one point in the story, when she is a young teenager, she begins to really become embarrassed by her
parents and more aware of her heritage. She states, "Ever more vulnerable, Papa began drinking heavily again. And I would watch it with sorrow and disgust, unable then to imagine
what he was going through, too far into my own junior high school survival" (Houston ). In this one sees her beginning to understand the perceptions of the outside world
and this is a very clear indication of coming of age. She was rebelling in a particular way and she was finding her own voice as she came of age.
She further notes how her mother worked every day and he stayed home and she was "ashamed of him for that and, in a deeper way, for being what
had led to our imprisonment, that is, for being so unalterably Japanese" (Houston 149). In this one sees her becoming very much, socially, aware of her heritage and it was
something that embarrassed her. And her father embarrassed her so much she would not bring friends home. Again, this is a coming of age condition as children become very aware
