a haunting story of a teenaged girl who is ultimately oblivious to the world and the dangers in the world. It is a story about a young woman exploring her
future in fantasy and song, and a story that possesses a final outcome that is potentially dangerous. The following paper examines how this particular story is also very much a
coming of age story. Coming of Age: Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? In this particular story the reader is introduced to a girl in her
teenaged years. She is very much a typical girl and is amused and entertained by music, friends, rebellious angst against her mother, and hamburger joints. The narrator tells the reader,
in the beginning, that "She was fifteen and she had a quick, nervous giggling habit of craning her neck to glance into mirrors or checking other peoples faces to make
sure her own was all right" (Oates). She was something of a vain young girl, knowing "she was pretty and that was everything" as she existed in the surreal teenage
world that exists between childhood and adulthood. Connie was very much an average girl. She believed her parents were ignorant and she believed that, in many ways, the world
revolved around her. She was, in many ways, experimenting with her sexuality as well, a very significant part in coming of age. She would, as the narrator indicates, behave and
dress a certain way at home, but outside she would ultimately flaunt her blond hair and play something of a seductress. This was because she really did not feel connected
with her sexuality and her identity away from being a pretty teenager. She felt everyone, but herself, was dull and boring and of no use to her. In essence, she
