"As I Lay Dying." It is a story of one womans desire to be buried in her home town when she dies. Her family, wishing to follow her desires, takes
a journey to the town of her birth so as to bury her according to her wishes. This family, however, is far from perfect, and far from a concretely loving
one. The husband is essentially a very lazy and ridiculous man, and the children all have their own particular quirks as well. In light of these realities, or conditions, Faulkner
has presented us with a relatively comical story that deals with a very serious subject. In the following paper we examine how and where the comical aspects of the story
reside, and also discuss how these comical elements help to create the story, providing much of its impact and power. The Comedy One of the first comical aspects
we see within Faulkners tale takes place while the mother/wife is dying. This is, as would be expected, a very serious situation and perhaps does not warrant any comedy at
all. But, Faulkner presents us with a comical approach, albeit somewhat subtly, that will set the stage for the story and its possession of comedic elements. As Addie Bundren
lays dying her son Cash is busy building her coffin. This is, in many ways, a very powerful and comedic element as presented by Faulkner. Another son states that "Addie
Bundren could not want a better one, a better box to lie in. It will give her confidence and comfort" (Faulkner NA). Now, while this is presented in something of
a serious tone, we, the reader, can see the humor in this, although it is perhaps a very dark and dismal humor as it truly illustrates the people involved in
