and imagination. It is a love story that is simple, though also complex due to comedic input, and also a very harmless little tale, unlike many of Shakespeares other works.
In this tale we are constantly presented with elements of comedy and elements of poetry that speak to the imagination, combining to make for a very pleasant and enjoyable play.
In the following paper we discuss particular parts of the story as they present us with comedy and poetic imagination. Midsummer Nights Dream In the very first lines
of the play we note a powerful and yet simply harmless look at love. This is not presented to us in a comedic fashion, but a simple poetic manner as
Theseus states, "Now, fair Hippolyta, our nuptial hour Draws on apace; four happy days bring in Another moon: but, O, methinks, how slow This old moon wanes! she lingers my
desires, Like to a step-dame or a dowager Long withering out a young man revenue" (Shakespeare I i). In reply Hippolyta states, "Four days will quickly steep themselves in night;
Four nights will quickly dream away the time; And then the moon, like to a silver bow New-bent in heaven, shall behold the night Of our solemnities" (Shakespeare I i).
In this we are set up with a very quiet and harmless love that is only waiting for consummation. It is a pleasant little scene that continues in its poetic
sense, offering us an innocence and beauty to the position of love. The first real element of comedy comes with the players, all of whom have quite ridiculous names.
