are to control the symptoms, such as coughing and shortness of breath, and to maintain normal lung function. This is achieved in some cases by the patient avoiding the kind
of irritants which may trigger an attack, such as dust mites or cigarette smoke, and these environmental factors are seen as an important element of managing the condition. It has
been suggested that a high percentage of modern asthma cases are the result of irritants caused by various forms of pollution, and that this is why there has been such
a significant increase in asthma in the past decade. There is therefore a current focus on managing environmental conditions - investigating which allergens
each individual patient needs to avoid, for example - and, perhaps because of the noticeable rise in cases of asthma, especially among children, a greater degree of public awareness of
the condition. In addition to environmental management, there has also been some interest in the possibilities afforded by herbal
remedies, such as coltsfoot, which tend to have fewer side-effects than pharmaceutical treatments. In some cases the condition is exacerbated by stress, and for these individuals, dealing with the stress
through counseling or psychotherapy has been found to be effective in reducing the asthmatic symptoms. However, for the majority of asthma
sufferers, drugs of one form or another are the usual form of treatment; this may be because this is actually the optimum method of managing the condition, or because western
social culture tends to regard pharmaceuticals as the only viable alternative, rather than looking to environmental management, complementary medicine, or holistic therapies.
