temptation to add such things. Johnston claims of Colwin, that she offers " the perfect antidote to the Martha-fication of modern life" (52). Indeed, life is complex. Laurie Colwins stories
are refreshingly simple. It is this simplicity that is carried out in terms of setting as well. Setting is very important to the short story as it gives the
work a flavor all its own. Readers will remember this particular story by the aura it exudes. The old fashioned nature and the simplicity of the work does render it
quite memorable. Here, in "An Old-Fashioned Story," the author broaches simple subject matter that goes to the heart. The subject of course is similar in nature to what many authors
