Columbia, Los Katios National Park encompasses over 72,000 hectares (UNESCO, 2009). Thanks in part to its varied topography, the park is home to an incredible diversity of plant and
animal species. Many of these species are threatened or endangered because of over-fishing, illegal logging, and planned highway construction (UPI News Track, 2009). Because of its ecological complexity this
site was added to the World Heritage list in 1994. In 2009 the park was added to the World Heritage Centers list of sites that were in danger (UPI
News Track, 2009). Los Katios is almost equally divided between the floodplain of the Atrato River and the the mountains of the Serran?a
del Dari?n (World Heritage Site, 2009). The resulting topography varies from aquatic habitat to wetlands to tropical rainforest to low hills. Although the park represents only one percent
of Columbias total land it contains over twenty-five percent of its bird species (World Reviewer, 2009). Indeed the rainforests and other
regions of the park contain some of the worlds most valuable resources. These resources include not only the trees themselves but also the understory plants and the myriad of
other organisms associated with the various resources. Los Katios is not an isolated example of the problems we are facing in regard to preserving rainforests and other pristine areas.
