saw or heard that the space shuttle Columbia had disintegrated. All seven members of the crew were lost. The Columbia had launched on January 16 for a 16-day science research
mission. They were coming home. What happened? Popular mass media broadcasted for hours on that day and continued to cover this story for many days to come. The initial
theory was that a piece of the heavy foam that shielded the external tank broke off and hit the wing when they were launching. Photos showed that something had hit
the edge of the left wing. A multidisciplinary group met together to discuss the possible damage to the shuttle. Experts from NASA, Boeing, and other organizations got together to
study the pictures and to discuss what they should do. By the time it was noticed, it was too late to abort. They could have shortened the mission but they
didnt. There is no guarantee that would have prevented the disintegration of the shuttle upon re-entry. The space program needed to be analyzed carefully and changed as needed. The Burke-Litwin
change model is one that can be used to evaluate an organization. Burke and Litwin offered a change model that is comprised on nine dimensions but they say that the
most important driving force for change is the external environment. The dimensions are: external environment, mission and strategy, leadership, organizational culture, management practices, systems like policies, etc., work unit climate,
