his appliance. The ostomy, of course, is the surgical procedure used to construct an opening from the inside of the body to the outside. This opening is necessitated
by a number of conditions, conditions that determine the specifics of the ostomy placement and function as well as terminology that is used to refer to the ostomy. The
term stoma, for example, refers to the opening that is created at the abdomen to allow stool to pass from the large intestine. An ileostomy, is an opening constructed
from the colon to the outside of the body (Kirkwood, 2005). Stomas can be either temporary or permanent but in either case the patient that has recently undergone this
operation will not only have to become familiar with the terminology but also with the equipment and methodology that is used in the care of the surgical opening.
The precise information that must be addressed with the ostomy patient varies, of course, according not only to the type of ostomy but
also to the particular patient. Kirkwood (2005, 20) points out that in order for the patients return to normal life to be optimized:
"The whole patient, should be assessed and physical, mental and social factors taken into account".
The location of the stoma is one of the primary physical determinants of care. Preferably, the stoma should be sited
