and there has been at least one TV version of the story. This paper examines the tale by discussing its color symbolism. Discussion Conrad uses color throughout the novella to
illustrate his points; it is far more than just color. Although its pretty obvious, the use of black and white is so basic to the work that those are the
colors well look at. First, though, lets look at one example that shows clearly that Conrad is aware of the power of color. When Marlowe first goes to work for
the company, he goes to their offices, and sees a map of Africa: "There was a vast amount of red-good to see at any time, because one knows that some
real work is done in there, a deuce of a lot of blue, a little green, smears of orange, and on the East Coast, a purple patch, to show where
the jolly pioneers of progress drink the jolly lager beer" (Conrad , 1950, p. 65). And then, separate from this list of colors, Marlow reveals that hes not going to
any of these areas: "I was going into the yellow. Dead in the center" (Conrad, 1950, p. 65). Lets consider what these colors mean to a color theorist. Interestingly, a
"color meaning" website lists exactly these same colors: red, blue, green, orange and purple, plus black and white, as the ones it chooses to explore. The reason for this is
simple: red, blue and yellow are the primary colors; when theyre mixed together in various combinations, the secondary colors of orange (yellow and red), green (blue and yellow) and purple
