Colonization of the Americas took discernibly different approaches according to the culture which was doing the colonizing. The difference between English and Spanish relations in the "New World" were particularly striking. These cultures dealt very differently with the indigenous peoples of the Americas as well as dealt very differently in terms of colonial administration and in such issues as indentured servitude and slavery. Each of these major colonizers of the "New World", had a slightly different way of viewing and interacting with the Native Americans who, it must be remembered, also had slightly different ways of viewing and interacting with the Europeans. There were similarities as well, however, in the way the English and Spanish dealt with Native Americans. The Europeans simply wanted what it was that the Native Americans had and they were willing to lie, deceive, steal and fight to get it. The cruelties inflicted by the Spanish on the Natives of the Caribbean basin was particularly harsh and unfeeling (Foner and Garraty PG). The technologically superior (at least in instruments of war) Spanish simply mowed down the largely defenseless Native populations (Foner and Garraty PG). Spain and Portugal were the first nations to reach the shores of the "New World". Their arrival preceded that of other major colonizers by a century and consequently they had much time during which the Natives of the new land were essentially at their disposal (Foner and Garraty PG). The colonized what was then considered the most desirable lands, conquering one Native cultural group after another and exploiting both them and the natural resources the lands had to offer (Foner and Garraty PG). ...
