two authors who generally present the reader with a look at how the white man, or colonialism, has often destroyed and forever altered the way of life of native and
cultural people. In Marquez "One Hundred Years of Solitude" and Silkos "Almanac of the Dead" we are offered up intricate accounts of two different cultures, Third World cultures, that are
all but destroyed through colonialism. The following paper examines the two novels separately, discussing how these realities are presented. One Hundred Years of Solitute As a novel containing
magical realism this is a novel that is filled with many different themes, and many different altered and symbolic presentations of life and culture. It is a novel of spiritualism
and hope, as well as a novel of despair and failure. One aspect of the novel that helps us realize these many faceted aspects is the aspect that relates to
the characters. The characters in this novel are generally people of a simple Third World culture, yet it is a culture rich with religion, tradition, and simplicity. It is
an isolated community of people, and as such we gain the understanding that this Third World location is solitary, an aspect that relates into the title concerning solitude. They are
alone in the beginning of the novel and they will be alone again in the end as the efforts to truly colonize this little region prove devastating but futile to
the dreams of a colonizing people. It is also interesting to note that Marquez does not necessarily limit the invasion ideas to the outsiders, but also to those within the
