Salihs "Season of Migration to the North" is a fictional tale of two men who have traveled similar yet divergently different paths in the world. Neither man is a hero but rather just one more of lifes travelers. Their stories are interesting, however, because their paths briefly merge and one has the opportunity to reflect on the similarities and the forces that have caused those similarities. One is given the opportunity for repentance and takes advantage of that opportunity. The other is filled with contempt for a life that in reality is the one that he desires the most. In the opening pages of Salihs "Season of Migration to the North" the reader finds the narrator returning to his home village in the Sudan. This is the place where he originated and the place where his grandfather still lives. He is returning from a journey insisted on by what some might say is one reflection of the forces of colonialism. He has been swept into a different life path by those that hint that his native place in life is insufficient and that he is worthy of much more. The narrator is returning from an extended trip to Europe where he studied in European schools and became conversant with European ways. Upon returning to his home village the narrator is greeted by the familar faces of those that he temporarily left behind. They are all curious as to what Europe was like, how people live their, whether Europeans are inherently moral or immoral. The narrator assures them that Europeans are just like them, that they not only had principles and traditions but also morals and values. ...
