argued that due to many modern advances in medical science life has now been extended and ailments which did not occur due to other mortality factors are now occurring before
cancer had the chance to become apparent. Cancer of the colon can be seen as developing as a result of abnormal changes occurring in the cells in the
lining of the bowel. There has been seen a direct link to colon and rectal cancer and diet. The inexplicable aspect of the link with diet is that over the
past few decades the amount and occurrence of stomach cancer has been reduce by about a third, whilst the occurrence of colon cancer has remained stable (BBC2, 2000). There
are three types of colon cancer, that with a DNA instability, that with a chromosomal instability, and recently a third type with both types of instability has been discovered (Medical
Post, 1998). It is thought that this third type of cancer is the most aggressive in spreading to other body parts (Medical Post, 1998). 80% of colon cancers are due
to chromosomal instability which starts with mutation of the APC gene and are often allied with the loss of normal genes (Medical Post, 1998). The DNA instability cancers are caused
by the erroneous function of the genes which are responsible for putting right mistakes when DNA replicates itself (Medical Post, 1998). A factor in colon cancer, especially the type with
the to chromosomal instability can be seen as having an hereditary factor (Feingold, 2000). Overweight or obese people also appear to be at an increased risk of colon cancer, as
do those who have a rapid weight gain (Archives of Internal Medicine, 2000). The incidence of colon cancer can be seen as most prevalent in individuals over forty (BBC2, 2000).
