countryside are under guerilla influence, the insurgency movement has lacked the military strength or support among the populace to succeed in overthrowing the government (CIA). In recent years,
an anti-insurgent army of paramilitaries has increased to several thousand strong and is challenging the insurgents for control of regions of Colombia, as well as control over drug trafficking (CIA).
