independence from Spain, and how that has impacted its economy to the present day. Discussion Colombian independence day is an important date in the countrys history, and is related to
independence movements all over the continent (Ospino). Cartagena was the first city to declare its independence (November 11, 1811) followed by Cundinamarca, Antioquia and Tunja in 1813 (Ospino). The central
figure in the independence of Colombia is of course Sim?n Bol?var, known as "The Liberator," who was instrumental in winning freedom for many countries in Latin America. He is described
as a "restless adolescent" who lost his father before he was three and his mother when he was nine (Sim?n Bol?var). He was tutored first by his maternal grandfather, and
when he died, Bol?var was cared for by his uncle, but left when he was 12 to go to the home of his sister and her husband, with whom he
was much closer (Sim?n Bol?var). Sim?n Bol?var studied in Caracas, and developed a friendship with Don Sim?n Rodr?guez, the headmaster of an elementary school in the city, that lasted
all his life. Bol?var studied history, literature, writing, religion, and Latin, among others; then when he was 14, he "entered the Battalion in the White Militia in the Aragua Valley,
which had been headed by his father, a Colonel years before" (Sim?n Bol?var). He was promoted to second lieutenant within a year and continued both his studies and his military
duties, making him a truly well-rounded individual (Sim?n Bol?var). He went to Spain in 1799 and continued his studies, adding French and the art of fencing to his accomplishments (Sim?n
Bol?var). He met and married Mar?a Teresa Rodr?guez del Toro y Alayza in Madrid, and married her in 1802; the newlyweds returned to Venezuela where Maria died in 1803
