collegiate behaviors and the college community; researchers have argued that the behaviors that are secured during this social period in early adulthood can continue throughout life. Significant issues have
been introduced in the current literature relating the problem of binge drinking and the long-term impacts to significant alcoholic tendencies and there is evidence that supports the correlation among racial/ethnic
variants, cultural perspective and the drinking habits. I am interested in this problem because I want to focus my studies and my career development towards alcohol and drug rehabilitation services.
College students with significant drug and alcohol problems need rehabilitative services to make significant changes that will alter their life choices. If patterns of behavior are secured in
early adulthood that have negative consequences like those related to binge drinking, it is likely these behaviors will follow them into adulthood. Research suggests that white students are the
most prevalent group impacted by binge drinking and Asian and African American populations are the most likely to abstain (InfoFacts, 2003). Contrary to existing stereotypes about African American and
Hispanic alcoholism in the mass media, white Americans are more likely to participate in damaging binge drinking activities on college campuses (InfoFacts, 2003). In fact, researchers have indicated that
historically black colleges have about half the percentage of students participating in risk-taking behaviors with alcohol, marijuana, tobacco and cocaine as compared to students on historically white colleges (InfoFacts, 2003).
In a national study conducted by the Core Institute, it was found that of the 40,000 college and university students studied, the largest portion of abstainers from
these bheaviors were Asian/Pacific Islanders, followed by African American students studied (InfoFacts, 2003). While 87 percent of white respondents stated to having used alcohol in the previous year, 72
