drummer for many years, creating both challenges and rewards that are immeasurable. Though I have always found value in moving to that different drummer, it has not always been
an easy dance. The student should use personal information in this section, including information that reflects when the diagnosis occurred, how it
impacted learning, services provided, etc. This example reflects one method for including this kind of personal information into an essay of this type. I was diagnosed with attention
deficit disorder (ADD) when I was in seventh grade. At the time, my parents believed the diagnoses was paramount to an educational death sentence, concerned that labeling me with
a Special Education designation during formative years would take me out of the college track and create more problems than it would solve. For me, though, the diagnosis helped
me understand that while ADD presented specific challenges in terms of maintaining focus and developing skills, support in the educational setting was necessary. Special Education support gave me tools
that other students might not have. Because of my ADD, I had to put in extra time, develop skills that fostered focus and create active plans for task completion.
