it really is, but as the first company to sell and market toothpaste to the mass market, and the gaining of the first mover advantages back in 1873 may still
be seen as having an impact. Looking at the current position of Colgate and the way technology is impacting on that position we can consider the development of the current
competitive advantages and the role that current developments as well as past history has played ion the attainment of the current position. Toothpaste of some sort has been used
for millennia, there are records going back to eh 500 B.C. to both India and China, however these were not the same type of toothpastes that we see today. The
first of the modern style toothpastes was developed by a dentist with the name of Peabody, who was the very first person to add soap to the mixture used to
clean teeth (Colgate Palmolive, 2006). Then, during the 1850s there was the addition of chalk to toothpaste by John Harris From this time forward contemporary technology has had a
role in the way toothpaste has been developed and sold (Colgate Palmolive, 2006). It may be argued that it was the application of technology that first brought Colgate into
the toothpaste market when they were the first to mass production toothpaste selling it in a jar. This was not new technology, but it was the first move at bring
toothpaste to the mainstream consumer markets. Technology played a role in increased sales and popularity as in 1896 there was the development and marketing of toothpaste in collapsible tubes.
This made the packaging and transportation of toothpaste more cost effective and help increase the spread. Research and development has also changed the make up of toothpaste over the years.
